Monthly meetings. The Mail Box. Phone calls. Group or personal E-mails two or three times a week. Its easy to stay connected with other Republican activists these days.Newspapers. 24 Hour Cable News. Political websites. Its also pretty easy to keep up to date with the latest news from the political world too. What if we could combine these two concepts and have a single outlet through which communications and news information could travel? This is just one of many things Facebook can do for your Republican Women’s Club. With Facebook, you can share information with other Republicans and your friends about events that are happening in real time. Together, you and your friends could discuss the situation. You could debate ideas about this new event and come up with a plan of action. You might send a message to your Congressman. You might rally your folks together. You could write an article and post it to a website where it could influence the opinions of thousands (or millions) of other people. Now, of course, you and your friends all do many of these activities already, yes? Well, Facebook makes it all much easier and more efficient. It’s the difference between travelling from New York to LA in a horse drawn carriage or the latest luxury SUV. Facebook combines an excellent email system (including video messaging), an instant messaging system, a customizable profile where you can describe yourself, powerful networking tools so you can easily find your friends and other Republican activists, events calendars, the ability to forms groups (for example, you could create the “Facebook Group for SDRWF”), community bulletin boards and discussion boards where you can hold public conversations with other members of your club, and dozens of other useful functions. On Facebook, you will be connected in real time with other Republican Women’s groups, with thought leaders around the country, and with Republican elected officials in D.C. By connecting together, Republicans can share and improve on each other’s ideas. We can debate about competing plans of action or the merits of different possible solutions to political problems. Facebook allows us learn from one another and to become more informed and get more involved. By using these kinds of Social Web tools, we will become a stronger political party. Now for the bad news….The Democrats have been busy on Facebook and other similar Social Web platforms for the past couple years. Just as Republican voices dominated the media of talk radio for the past few decades, Democrats are currently in a stronger position with this new form of media. Using these new forms of media, Democrats were able to out maneuver, out organize, out politick us in this past election. They currently use much better communications tools that we generally do. The good news is that we can do something about it. Facebook is free and it is not that complicated to learn. We simply need to make an effort to get onboard. Next article...
